COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL
Cocos nucifera oil, also known as coconut oil, is a plant-derived fatty acid oil extracted from the rich white lining (or meat) of coconuts.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Coconut oil is a wonder oil selected for its incredible moisturizing properties in our cleansing, and antiperspirant products.
HOW IS IT MADE?
Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.
We use a variety of coconut oils depending on the product application and the properties required. Our organic extra virgin coconut oil is pressed and filtered from the dried meat from organically grown coconut palm. Our coconut oil and organic coconut oil use expeller-pressed coconut meat, which is filtered and then deodorized using vacuum steam distillation.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
Other nut and seed based essential oils include shea butter, argan, jojoba and safflower seed. There are synthetic alternatives to coconut oil, but they do not meet our Stewardship Model standards for natural, responsible and sustainable.
IS THIS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR ME?
Coconut oil is nontoxic and Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
