INGREDIENTS
MENTHOL
Menthol is naturally derived from oil extracted from the leaves of the cornmint plant (Mentha arvensis).
WHAT DOES IT DO?
Menthol adds natural, refreshing flavor to our mouthwashes.
HOW IS IT MADE?
Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.
The essential oil is extracted from the mint leaves using steam distillation. The oil is then further distilled and cooled to form menthol crystals.
WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES?
Menthol can be and often is synthetically made, but this version would not meet our Stewardship Model standards for natural, responsible and sustainable.
IS THIS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR ME?
The safety of menthol has been covered extensively. Menthol is considered generally regarded as safe (GRAS) by FEMA (#2665). In addition, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) derived in their 51st meeting in 1998 an acceptable ADI for menthol1.
Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
