What is it?

Eugenol, also called clove oil, is a plant-derived fatty acid made up of the extract of dried flower buds, leaves and stems of the clove tree Syzygium aromaticum or Eugenia caryophyllata.

What does it do?

Eugenol is used in some of our toothpaste as a natural breath freshener and flavouring agent.

How is it made?

Our Stewardship Model guides us to select ingredients which have been processed in a manner that supports our philosophy of human and environmental health.

Our eugenol is derived from clove oil, which is steam distilled and decanted for purification and use.

What are the alternatives?

There are other herbals used in our botanical line, but there is no natural alternative to eugenol.

Tom’s of Maine recognizes that no two people are alike, and even with naturally derived ingredients, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction that is unique to them. As with any product, be sure to discontinue use if you experience discomfort or other indications that the product may not be appropriate for your individual body chemistry.
